My Life in the Country

The entry below is a synopsis of our speakers talk on 17th September 2025

The Presentation this week was by Mr John Say.

John’s talk covered his time in the farming industry from his early ages compared to now.

He grew up in the country and started by comparing farm machines. The combine size, instead of being, about the width of this front seat, became so large it only just about getting into it this room. Things just grew. It got more mechanical, but it requirred fewer people to do the same work. Even in the church they've got proper organs [they weren’t that great].

It wasn’t just having lots of money, or this, that, and the other, but the companionship that we had. What you did, you didn't just know everybody else, many people were born, families had friends and they had street parties. You didn't just get a few in one little bit of the street, the whole road was full. We even had an Olympic Games. I mean, the shot and the put, you think of an Olympic shot. My dad, was as strong as ox and he could only get it about 12 feet.

It's fantastic, the chaps, and chapesses from surrounding hospices, they come in ruffles, they probably, came and sit and yawn, yawn, tell stories.

Questions followed to conclude another excellent presentation and a very good morning for all our members who thoroughly enjoyed every moment.
